Sports Betting Journal: Tracking 30 Bets Revealed The Real Edge
How Tracking 30+ Bets In A Journal Completely Changed One Bettor's Win Rate
This week we are featuring an analysis originally shared by Reddit user u/muztebi16 in the r/SoccerBetting community. With his permission, we are republishing his findings here with our own commentary added. You can find the original discussion at reddit.com/r/SoccerBetting.
The short version: a bettor who got tired of betting on gut feeling decided to log every single wager in a spreadsheet, down to the timestamp, the number of legs, whether the bet was placed pre-match or live, and even his own state of mind at the time. After 30 logged bets, the numbers told a much clearer story than intuition ever could.
The Setup
Instead of relying on instinct or chasing action during live games, u/muztebi16 built a strict bet journal in Google Sheets. Every entry recorded the same fields: pre-match versus in-play, number of legs on the ticket, kickoff timing, stake, return, and whether the bet was planned in advance or made on impulse.
Thirty settled bets later, four clear patterns emerged.
Two-Leg Parlays Outperformed Everything Else
The standout finding was around parlay size. Two-leg pre-match parlays hit a perfect record across every settled ticket. The moment a third leg was added, the win rate dropped sharply to roughly a third of bets landing, and four-leg tickets did not win at all in the sample.
The takeaway is straightforward: stacking legs onto a slip for a bigger payout feels appealing, but each extra leg compounds risk fast. Two well-researched, high-conviction picks combined into one ticket gave the best balance between reward and consistency.
Live Betting Was Where The Bankroll Bled Out
The gap between planned and impulsive betting was just as stark. Bets researched and placed before kickoff won more than four times out of five and accounted for almost all of the net profit in the sample. Bets placed live, in the moment, or in reaction to a game already in progress, won roughly one in four times and consistently erased the gains made elsewhere.
The lesson here matches what most experienced bettors already suspect: if a bet was not researched and locked in before the match started, it is usually a worse bet. In-play markets move fast and sportsbooks price in the emotional decision-making that live betting invites.
Staggered Kickoffs Beat Overlapping Ones
A smaller but interesting pattern showed up around scheduling. Tickets built from matches kicking off at different times throughout the day performed noticeably better than tickets where every leg kicked off simultaneously. Spacing out matches made it easier to follow each leg individually rather than trying to track several live scores at once under pressure.
Why The Journal Itself Was The Real Edge
None of these patterns would have been visible without writing every bet down first. A few things the journal exposed:
Tilt: Late-night live bets clustered almost exactly around nights following a loss, a classic sign of chasing.
Position sizing: Tickets staked at 10 to 15 percent of bankroll produced far rougher drawdowns than tickets kept to a flat 5 to 10 percent.
Real edge versus perceived edge: It is easy to assume a strength exists in live betting or bigger parlays until the spreadsheet says otherwise.
The Checklist
Pre-match only. Do the research and place the bet before kickoff, not during.
Two legs, not five. Keep parlays small and high conviction.
Stagger your kickoffs. Pick matches that start at different times so each leg can be followed cleanly.
Log everything. Stake, odds, leg count, timing, and mindset, every single time.
